Menopause, Wellness & Cannabinoids: Understanding CBD, CBG & CBN

Menopause is a natural stage of life—but for many women, the transition can bring changes that affect everyday wellness.

Changes in sleep, mood, energy, temperature regulation and overall comfort may begin during perimenopause and continue through menopause and beyond. Every woman's experience is different, which is why conversations about menopause increasingly include not only traditional approaches, but also lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, stress management and other wellness options.

One area attracting growing interest is the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) and plant-derived cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG and CBN.

At Physicians’ Natural Choice, we believe education should come before promises. Cannabinoid research is developing, but CBD, CBG and CBN should not be presented as treatments or cures for menopause or menopausal symptoms.

Understanding the Endocannabinoid System

The human body naturally produces compounds known as endocannabinoids. Together with cannabinoid receptors and enzymes, they form the endocannabinoid system, a biological signaling network involved in maintaining balance throughout the body.

Researchers continue to study the ECS and its relationship to processes including mood, sleep, stress response and other aspects of normal physiology.

Plant-derived cannabinoids—or phytocannabinoids—can also interact directly or indirectly with components of this system.

Three cannabinoids receiving considerable attention are CBD (cannabidiol), CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol).

CBD: The Best-Known Non-Intoxicating Cannabinoid

CBD is one of the most extensively studied cannabinoids and generally does not produce the intoxicating “high” associated with THC.

For women navigating menopause, CBD is increasingly discussed as part of a broader wellness routine, particularly in areas such as relaxation, nighttime routines and general well-being.

Research into CBD continues, but current evidence does not establish CBD as a treatment for menopause, hot flashes, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, insomnia, pain or other menopausal symptoms.

Women taking prescription medications should discuss CBD with their healthcare provider because CBD can interact with certain medications and may cause side effects, including drowsiness and gastrointestinal symptoms. FDA has also identified potential risks including liver injury and drug interactions.

CBG: An Emerging Cannabinoid

CBG, or cannabigerol, is another naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp. It is sometimes referred to as a “minor cannabinoid” because mature hemp plants typically contain much smaller concentrations of CBG than CBD.

Research involving CBG is considerably less developed than research involving CBD, but early human research is generating interest.

For example, a small 2024 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study involving 34 healthy adults evaluated 20 mg of hemp-derived CBG. Researchers observed reductions in participants' subjective ratings of anxiety and stress compared with placebo without evidence of intoxication or motor impairment. This was a small study in healthy adults—not a menopause study—and substantially more research is necessary before conclusions can be drawn.

For women interested in cannabinoid wellness, CBG therefore represents an emerging area of research rather than an established menopause therapy.

CBN: Why It Is Often Associated With Nighttime Wellness

CBN, or cannabinol, has become particularly popular in products designed for nighttime routines.

Sleep changes are common during the menopausal transition, which helps explain why women may encounter CBN when researching wellness products.

Researchers have begun conducting controlled human studies of hemp-derived CBN formulations and sleep. Results are still developing, however, and the scientific evidence for CBN remains much more limited than advertising on the internet sometimes suggests.

CBN has not been established as a treatment for menopause or menopausal insomnia.

At Physicians’ Natural Choice, we believe this distinction is important: promising research should encourage additional research—not exaggerated medical claims.

CBD + CBG + CBN: Different Cannabinoids for Different Wellness Goals

Rather than viewing every cannabinoid as interchangeable, consumers can think about them as distinct compounds being investigated for different properties.

CBD is the most familiar of the three and is widely incorporated into general wellness and relaxation routines.

CBG is an emerging cannabinoid being investigated for several potential applications, including stress and mood-related research.

CBN is increasingly associated with nighttime formulations and is currently being investigated for its potential relationship with sleep.

None should be considered a substitute for appropriate medical evaluation or FDA-approved treatment for menopausal symptoms.

Menopause Deserves an Individualized Approach

Menopause is not an illness. It is a natural biological transition, and no two women experience it exactly the same way.

A comprehensive wellness plan may include appropriate medical care, nutrition, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, resistance and weight-bearing exercise, stress management and good sleep habits.

Women experiencing significant hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal symptoms, mood changes, persistent insomnia or other concerns should speak with a qualified healthcare professional about available treatment options.

Cannabinoids may be something an adult chooses to discuss with a healthcare provider as part of a broader wellness conversation—but they should not replace appropriate medical care.

Quality Matters

The cannabinoid marketplace can be confusing. Product quality, cannabinoid concentrations and labeling can vary.

Physicians’ Natural Choice believes consumers should look for products that provide transparent labeling and independent laboratory testing.

Our approach emphasizes:

• Hemp-derived cannabinoids
• Third-party laboratory testing
• Batch-specific Certificates of Analysis (COAs)
• Transparent cannabinoid information
• Quality-focused manufacturing
• Education before marketing claims

CBD, CBG and CBN products discussed in this article have not been established by FDA as treatments for menopause or menopausal symptoms. Except for specific FDA-approved prescription cannabinoid medications for particular medical indications, consumer hemp-derived cannabinoid products have not been approved by FDA to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.

Always consult a physician, pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional before using a cannabinoid product, particularly if you have a medical condition or take prescription or over-the-counter medications. Cannabinoids, including CBD, may interact with medications and may cause adverse effects.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: FDA strongly advises against the use of CBD, THC and marijuana during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding should consult their healthcare professional.

Do not discontinue, reduce or replace prescription medications, hormone therapy or other physician-recommended treatment with CBD, CBG, CBN or another cannabinoid product without consulting your healthcare provider.

Products containing THC may cause impairment and may result in a positive drug test. Do not drive or operate machinery if a product causes drowsiness or impairment. Keep all cannabinoid products out of the reach of children and pets.

U.S. Hemp & 50-State Legal Disclaimer

Under the federal framework established by the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (“2018 Farm Bill”), hemp has generally been distinguished from marijuana based on its delta-9 THC concentration. However, federal hemp status does not mean that every hemp-derived cannabinoid product is lawful for sale, shipment, possession or use in every state or locality.

Federal, state and local laws governing hemp, CBD and other cannabinoids are evolving and may impose different requirements regarding product type, cannabinoid concentration, total THC, age restrictions, labeling, testing, food products, shipping and possession.

Physicians’ Natural Choice does not represent that every product is available or lawful in every U.S. state or jurisdiction. Availability may vary by state.

Consumers are responsible for understanding and complying with the laws applicable in their state and locality before purchasing, possessing or using hemp-derived cannabinoid products. Physicians’ Natural Choice may restrict or discontinue shipment of particular products to jurisdictions where required by applicable law.
