How to Talk to Your Physician About CBD and Cannabinoids

Talking With Your Doctor About Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System

One of the most common concerns patients express when exploring cannabinoid wellness options is how their other healthcare providers might feel about cannabis use.

In my 10 years practicing as a medical cannabis provider, this question comes up frequently. Many patients worry that bringing up cannabis or CBD might be uncomfortable or even discouraged by their primary care physician.

Fortunately, attitudes are gradually changing.

For many years cannabis was widely viewed only as a drug of abuse, and that perception shaped how both the public and the medical community approached it. Today, however, as research into cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) continues to grow, more healthcare professionals are beginning to recognize that cannabis may have legitimate therapeutic and wellness applications.

Even so, some patients still feel hesitant about starting the conversation.

A Simple Way to Start the Conversation

One approach I often recommend is to begin the discussion in the third person, removing yourself from the question initially. This allows the conversation to remain educational rather than personal.

For example, you might ask:

  • “How do you feel about cannabis or CBD for health and wellness?”
  • “Do you have patients who use cannabis products?”
  • “What is your perspective on cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system?”

Questions like these can help open the door to a thoughtful and productive discussion.

If your physician appears uncomfortable discussing cannabis—which is becoming less common today—you may choose not to pursue the topic further. However, many patients are pleasantly surprised to find that their providers are more open to the conversation than expected.

Patients Are Often Leading the Education

Interestingly, patients who have taken the time to learn about cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system often bring valuable information to the discussion.

Because the ECS was only discovered in 1992, many physicians were never formally taught about it during their medical training. As awareness of the system grows, patients and providers alike are learning more about how cannabinoids interact with the body.

In some cases, patients may even find themselves introducing their healthcare providers to concepts surrounding the ECS and cannabinoid science.
